What Is DUPR and How Do You Get Rated?

If you've spent any time around a pickleball club, you've heard someone ask "what's your DUPR?" It's become the common language players use to find fair, competitive games. Here's what the rating actually is, why it beats guessing your own skill level, and how to get one and keep it current inside Pikel.

What DUPR is

DUPR stands for Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating. It's a single number — on a scale from 2.0 to 8.0 — that reflects how well you play based on the results of real matches. It's "dynamic" because it moves as you play, "universal" because it works across clubs, cities, and countries, and it counts both doubles and singles on the same scale.

The key idea: DUPR is earned, not declared. Instead of guessing whether you're a "3.5," your rating comes from who you played and how the games actually went. Beat players above your level and it climbs. It's the difference between a self-assigned label and a track record.

Why it matters

A shared, honest rating solves the oldest problem in rec pickleball: mismatched games. Nobody enjoys a 11-2 blowout — not the winners, not the losers. When everyone has a DUPR, organizers can seed brackets, balance teams, and fill round robins with players close in level, so the games are close and everybody has fun.

That's why Pikel leans on DUPR throughout: rated games, skill-balanced matchups, and standings that mean something. Fairness is the whole point — everyone gets a shot at a good game.

Step 1 — Get a DUPR account

DUPR is a free rating service. Create an account with DUPR, and you'll have a profile that any club or app can report your rated matches to. If you've ever played in a sanctioned tournament or a club that reports scores, you may already have one waiting under your name.

Step 2 — Link DUPR in pikel

Pikel walks you through linking your DUPR account during onboarding — the DUPR step is turned on by default, so you'll see it right as you set up your profile. Connect your account there and you're done.

Missed it, or signed up before you had a DUPR account? You can link it any time: open your Profile and tap the Connect DUPR card, or go to Connected accounts → DUPR. Once it's connected, Pikel and DUPR are tied together for good — no copying scores between apps.

Step 3 — Play rated matches, and the host submits them

A host makes a game DUPR rated when creating it: in How scores are handled, turn on DUPR rated (DUPR only accepts scores both teams agreed on, so Validate scores comes with it) and pick Standard or Rally scoring. Require a linked DUPR account keeps the RSVPs to linked players. The same switches are in Edit Game.

Once you're linked, reporting is effortless — but in a regular game it is not automatic. When a DUPR-rated game ends, the game's host reviews the matches and sends them with Submit Round to DUPR or Submit Game to DUPR; your rating updates when DUPR returns it. Players don't tap anything. In a tournament, DUPR is switched on per division, and a match in a DUPR division is sent on its own once both sides confirm. No spreadsheets, no typing scores into DUPR by hand: your rating history builds from the games you already play.

Pro tip

Don't chase the number for its own sake. The fastest way to improve your DUPR is to play people slightly better than you, as often as you can — rated games against stronger opponents move your rating more than easy wins do. Link your account early so those matches actually count toward your record instead of disappearing into a group chat.
