Questions

How does a single elimination bracket work?
Lose once and you're out; winners move on until one team is left. A field of N teams plays N − 1 matches to find a champion, plus one more if you play a 3rd-place match between the losing semifinalists.
How does a double elimination bracket work?
Every team can lose once and stay alive. A first loss drops a team into the losers bracket; a second loss ends its day. The winners-bracket champion meets the losers-bracket champion in the grand final, and if the losers-side team wins, both now have one loss, so a reset match decides it. That is 2N − 2 matches, or 2N − 1 with the reset.
What is a bye, and who gets one?
A bracket fills evenly only at 4, 8, 16 or 32 teams. With any other number, the empty slots are byes: the top seeds skip the first round and start in round two. 12 teams in a 16-slot draw means 4 byes, for seeds 1 to 4.
How are teams seeded?
List teams strongest first. The draw pairs 1 against the lowest seed, 2 against the next lowest, and so on, placed so seeds 1 and 2 can only meet in the final. Ratings, a pool-play finish or last season's result are all common ways to rank them.
Is the bracket generator free? Do I need an account?
It's free and needs no sign-up. The bracket is built in your browser, and team names you type never leave the page. Print it, or pick Save as PDF in the print dialog.
Can I run the bracket live instead of on paper?
Yes. In the pikel app, teams register for your tournament, you check them in on the day, pikel can send the next ready match to the next open court, and the bracket fills in as scores go in. It runs pools into a bracket, and double elimination divisions.
