Pickleball Formats

Pick the right rotation — round robin, popcorn, scramble, King of the Court and more.

What is the Double Header format?

Double Header pairs every player with every other player for exactly two games per partnership before the shuffle. You get two cracks with each partner — sweep both or split 1-1 — then rotate. It runs for 4 to 32 players.

Why two games instead of one?

One game can turn on a couple of lucky points. Two games per partnership gives every pairing a fairer read: sweep both for full points, split 1-1 and you each take one — so every game counts toward your total.

How many players per court does it need?

Exactly 4 per court — it's built around full doubles matchups. It runs best at 8 to 16 players total; go much larger and the rounds stretch past a two-hour session.

How is the winner decided?

By total points across both games of every matchup. Partners rotate, so your points are your own across the night, and standings update live.

How long does a Double Header session take?

About two hours at 8 to 16 players — each round cranks out enough games to fill a solid session without dragging.

Is King of the Court a tournament?

No — it's a session format, not a tournament type. You run it as a recurring weekly game night, and each session's results seed the next. It lives alongside Popcorn and Shuffle in the format picker, not in the tournament builder.

How does the ladder carry over week to week?

King of the Court has three tiers — Challenge, Advanced, and Regular. Where you finish this week sets where you're placed next week. Finish strong on the Challenge court and you carry top priority into the next session's placements.

How many players do I need?

King of the Court is built for 8 to 48 players. It shines with a steady group that meets every week — the carryover is the whole point, so a one-off night doesn't get the payoff.

What if my group is brand new and has no history?

Seed the first session yourself. Placement matters most on week one because there's no prior result to carry over — set it manually, then let carryover take over from week two on.

Which court is the top court?

Court 1 is the Challenge court — the one everyone's trying to reach and hold. The three-tier bracket runs Challenge, Advanced, and Regular from the top down.

What is the Mixed Madness format?

Mixed Madness is an all-night mixed-doubles rotation: every team is one player from each side, matchups are random, and you get a new partner each round. It runs for 4 to 24 players, and the scheduler handles uneven numbers for you.

How does it handle non-binary players or players who haven't set a gender?

They're never excluded. If your profile gender is non-binary, you pick a side just for that session — two taps — and can choose the other side next time. If you simply haven't set a gender yet, that two-tap prompt sets your profile's side (men's or women's) and you're placed there automatically from then on. Either way you rotate through the night like everyone else.

What if I don't have equal numbers on each side?

The scheduler does the math. It handles a small imbalance cleanly, so a couple more players on one side won't break the rotation — it works best with roughly equal numbers on each side.

How is the winner decided?

By personal win percentage. Because partners rotate every round, your record is your own, and the highest win percentage across the night wins. Standings update live.

How many games does each player get?

One game per round, then everyone switches courts — the same fast-rotation rhythm as Popcorn, but locked to mixed-doubles pairings.

What is pool play in pickleball?

Pool play splits teams into small groups called pools. Every team plays every other team in its pool round-robin style, and the top teams from each pool advance to a single-elimination championship bracket. It combines the fairness of a round robin with the drama of a knockout finish.

How many games does each team play in pool play?

In the pool stage, each team plays one game against every other team in its pool, so a four-team pool means three pool games per team. Teams that advance then play bracket games until they're eliminated or win it all.

Is pool play the same as a round robin?

It starts like one. The pool stage is a round robin within each group. The difference is what comes after: pool play adds a championship bracket, so standings decide who advances rather than crowning the winner outright.

Can I run pool play in Pikel today?

Pool Play is coming soon as a round robin format — tap Notify me in the format picker and we'll tell you the moment it's ready. If you want a pools-into-a-bracket structure right now, Pikel's tournament creator already runs Pools → Bracket.

What is the Popcorn pickleball format?

Popcorn is a rotating-partner round robin: each round you get a new partner and a new opponent, and the scheduler picks matchups to maximize who you meet. It's Pikel's default and most popular format, and it scales from 4 to 32 players.

How is the winner decided in Popcorn?

By win percentage. Since your partner changes every round, your record is your own — the highest personal win percentage across the night takes it. Standings update live as scores come in.

How many players do I need for Popcorn?

Anywhere from 4 to 32. You need at least 4 accepted players before Pikel generates rounds, and odd numbers get fair byes that rotate so nobody sits out twice in a row.

Is Popcorn good for a group where everyone knows each other's skill?

It's best when players are around the same skill level — that's when random matchups stay competitive. For a wider skill spread, a seeded or ladder format keeps games closer.

Can I run Popcorn without a fixed number of rounds?

Yes. Popcorn plays one game per round and you can run as many rounds as your court time allows — add a round when the group wants more, or finish early when the courts have to clear.

What is the Scramble pickleball format?

Scramble is Popcorn trimmed for smaller groups. Players sort onto courts of 4 to 5 and play a game with every partner on that court before the next reshuffle — you get the mixing without switching courts after every single game. It runs for 4 to 24 players.

How is Scramble different from Popcorn?

Popcorn switches courts after every game for maximum unique matchups. Scramble keeps players on the same court for several games (3 to 5 per round), so there's less court-hopping — better for a smaller, tighter group.

Is Scramble good for odd numbers?

It's the format to reach for when your numbers are odd. Sit-outs rotate fairly, so the byes spread evenly across everyone instead of landing on the same person twice.

How is the winner decided?

By win percentage. Partners rotate within your court, so your record is your own, and the highest win percentage takes it. Standings update live.

How many players does Scramble handle?

4 to 24. Above that, Popcorn scales better; below that, Scramble keeps a small group busy with less standing around.

What is the Shuffle pickleball format?

Shuffle is the fixed-partner version of Popcorn. You keep the same partner the whole session and take on new opponents each round. It runs for 6 to 32 players and handles late arrivals, so you can add teams as they show up.

How is the winner decided in a fixed-partner format?

By team win percentage. Since you're locked with one partner all session, your record is your pair's — the highest team win percentage wins. Standings update live.

Do partners register together?

Yes. Shuffle is a fixed-partner format, so players pair up and Pikel keeps those pairs together across every round while rotating the opponents they face.

What if players arrive late?

Shuffle slots late arrivals right in — a new pair can join between rounds, and you can run as many rounds as your court time allows.

Is there a fast way to start a Shuffle game?

Yes — Shuffle is Pikel's Quick Game one-tap shortcut. When you just want to get four people on a court without walking through every setting, Quick Game starts a Shuffle for you.
