Video walkthrough coming soonWe're filming a step-by-step video for this guide. Follow the steps below in the meantime.

Scramble is what you run when you've got a smaller group and you want the social mixing of Popcorn without everyone shuffling to a new court after every single game. Players settle onto a court, play through everyone on it, then reshuffle. This guide covers how Scramble works, when it beats Popcorn, and how to set one up.

What Scramble is

Scramble is Popcorn with the dial turned down — ideal for groups of 4-24 where you want the mixing without the constant court changes. Players sort onto courts of 4-5 and play a game with every partner on that court. Sit-outs rotate fairly when numbers are odd.

Three things define it:

When Scramble beats Popcorn

Scramble and Popcorn are cousins — both mix partners, both rank by win percentage. The difference is court movement. Choose Scramble when:

Choose Popcorn instead when your group is larger, or when maximizing the number of unique partners each player meets matters more than cutting down on court changes.

How the pods work

Scramble sorts players into small pods — courts of 4 to 5 — and each pod plays a self-contained mini round robin, pairing you with every other player on your court before anyone reshuffles. That's why it's 3 to 5 games per round instead of one: you stay put and cycle through your court's partners. When the round ends, the pods reshuffle and you're mixed onto a fresh court with new faces. It's the reason a small group can play a full, social night on one or two courts without the constant churn.

Step 1 — Create the game and pick Scramble

Tap the plus (➕) button, choose Round Robin, then open the format picker and select Scramble. It's built for 4 to 24 players.

Step 2 — Set your courts

Set your court count (1 to 20) and enter real court numbers if they aren't sequential. Scramble sorts players onto courts of 4 to 5, so your court count and player count together decide how the pods land — a smaller group on fewer courts keeps everyone playing.

Step 3 — Invite players and fill the game

Share the game and let players RSVP. Fair RSVP gives everyone a shot at limited spots, and the waitlist promotes the next person if someone drops. You need at least 4 accepted players before you generate rounds.

Step 4 — Generate rounds and play

Open the Rounds tab and tap Start Game. Pikel sorts players onto courts and builds a game with each partner on that court before the next reshuffle. Odd numbers? Sit-outs rotate fairly, so no one carries more than their share of byes.

Step 5 — Score courtside and track standings

Enter scores at the net — winning number, loser's number, one tap to confirm. Mistype one and the host can reopen the match to fix it. Standings rank each player by win percentage, live, with a podium for the top three.

Pro tip

Pick this when you have odd numbers — sit-outs spread evenly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Scramble pickleball format?

Scramble is Popcorn trimmed for smaller groups. Players sort onto courts of 4 to 5 and play a game with every partner on that court before the next reshuffle — you get the mixing without switching courts after every single game. It runs for 4 to 24 players.

How is Scramble different from Popcorn?

Popcorn switches courts after every game for maximum unique matchups. Scramble keeps players on the same court for several games (3 to 5 per round), so there's less court-hopping — better for a smaller, tighter group.

Is Scramble good for odd numbers?

It's the format to reach for when your numbers are odd. Sit-outs rotate fairly, so the byes spread evenly across everyone instead of landing on the same person twice.

How is the winner decided?

By win percentage. Partners rotate within your court, so your record is your own, and the highest win percentage takes it. Standings update live.

How many players does Scramble handle?

4 to 24. Above that, Popcorn scales better; below that, Scramble keeps a small group busy with less standing around.
